La obra fue levantada entre 1562 y 1567, luego de la autorizaci\u00f3n del <a href=\"http:\/\/null\/wiki\/Papa\" title=\"Papa\">Papa<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/null\/wiki\/P%C3%ADo_IV\" title=\"P\u00edo IV\">P\u00edo IV<\/a> y de la petici\u00f3n del rey <a href=\"http:\/\/null\/wiki\/Felipe_II_de_Espa%C3%B1a\" title=\"Felipe II de Espa\u00f1a\">Felipe II<\/a>, se erigi\u00f3 en catedral a la iglesia de la capital del Yucat\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<p>Los trabajos de la construcci\u00f3n del recinto fueron encargados a Pedro de Aleustia, y completados por Juan Miguel de Ag\u00fcero.<\/p>\n<p>Durante el <a href=\"http:\/\/null\/wiki\/Siglo_XIX\" title=\"Siglo XIX\">siglo XIX<\/a>, algunos de los tesoros y obras de arte fueron robadas debido a los saqueos e inestabilidad pol\u00edtica que padeci\u00f3 la ciudad en este periodo<\/p>\n<p>Consta de tres naves, una central y dos laterales. Cuenta con tres capillas y la sacrist\u00eda. Originalmente cont\u00f3 con cinco capillas, pero fueron demolidas. Presenta dos torres de dos cuerpos.
