En su obra literaria figuran, entre m\u00e1s de una treintena de libros, Castigo divino (1988), Premio Internacional Dashiel Hammett de Novela; Un baile de m\u00e1scaras (1995), Premio Laure Bataillon a la mejor novela extranjera en Francia en 1998; Margarita est\u00e1 linda la mar,\u00a0 Premio Alfaguara de Novela 1998, y Premio Latinoamericano Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Arguedas en el 2000. As\u00ed tambi\u00e9n Cuentos completos (1998), con pr\u00f3logo de Mario Benedetti; Adi\u00f3s Muchachos, memoria de la revoluci\u00f3n sandinista, (1999); el libro de cuentos Catalina y Catalina (2001); Mentiras Verdaderas (2001) y El viejo arte de mentir (2004), ambos sobre la creaci\u00f3n literaria (2001); las novelas Sombras nada m\u00e1s (2002) y Mil y una muertes (2004); Se\u00f1or de los Tristes, ensayos sobre escritores y escritura (2006),\u00a0 El reino animal, cuentos (2006), Tambor olvidado, ensayos (2007) y El cielo llora por m\u00ed, cuentos (2008).
