Pintado en Roma, se exhibi\u00f3 al p\u00fablico en el Pante\u00f3n en marzo de 1650. Es obvio que Vel\u00e1zquez quer\u00eda impresionar a sus colegas italianos con su talento, ya que, seg\u00fan su bi\u00f3grafo Antonio Palomino, \u00abpuso este retrato con tan universal aplauso en dicho sitio que, a voto de todos los pintores de diferentes naciones, todo lo dem\u00e1s parec\u00eda pintura, pero este solo verdad\u00bb.
